PLEASE ALSO ADD YOUR REPORT TO FIREBALLS AOTEAROA:

Fireball Aotearoa is a collaboration between scientists at the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, and citizen scientists who operate meteor observation cameras across Aotearoa New Zealand. Their aim is to recover freshly-fallen meteorites following fireball events. Simply go here to do this:  https://fireballs.nz/about/

Please do not email us as we can’t reply to meteor reports – due to the overwhelming volume of normal daily sightings. Please do not be offended if you do not hear back from us about a meteor sighting or light sighting in the sky.

Please note – we may share your email address with Fireballs NZ if they request to follow up on any casual sightings. Please be ok with this possibility when you share your email address with WeatherWatch.co.nz. Thanks!

Shooting star going from SE to NW- short white flash

I was night mountain biking in Whakarewarewa Forest on 5th May 20.35. I was crossing a wide clearing, which was pitch black but for my torch. Suddenly the whole area lit up around me. I thought someone had set off a flare but I looked up to see a fireball racing across the sky.

North to south short in length

Cheyenne, NZ on 5/05/2024 10:28am

Around 20.33pm NZT looking up at the sky from Flatbush Auckland there was a shooting light in the sky more closer in view than the odd shooting star, in a split second it seemed to crash collide with itself and set off a orange glow of light as if a small light bomb went off, then shot off north leaving an orange line that had dissolved in a matter of seconds. Was really unbelievable to see. Never seen anything like it. My partner also witnessed it too. Hoping someone else spotted it also please reply if so.

South Waikato – I seen it! Sky flashed up like lightening then a fire ball racing through for maybe 4 seconds. I will never forget.

around 8.30pm today i saw an object that was bright travelling at hight speed and it very quickly turned orange red leaving a trail of orange/red before disappearing about a second later. looks like it caught fire or blew up then disappeared.

not entirely sure of direction but if had to guess I would say heading north east.
